While you need
proof of insurance
to take your driving test, you do not need full coverage. However,
full coverage car insurance
won’t disqualify you from the driving test if that’s the insurance you or your parents have.
When you take the test, you only need
liability coverage
that meets your state’s minimum car insurance requirements. Some states may also require uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in addition to liability. Call your local DMV and confirm your state’s requirements to prevent a delay in getting your license or needing to reschedule your driver’s test.
Even though you don’t need full coverage car insurance to take the driving test, you may want to think about it if you get a new car. Since full coverage is expensive for younger drivers, make sure to use the
