Do you need an international driving license in South Africa?

I’ve signed up for a mission trip to South Africa, and I think I’ll be expected to drive at times. How can I do this legally? Will I need an IDP?

Mission trips are a great way to see the world while helping others. You’ll be able to drive with your US-issued license in South Africa because it’s in English. You need an international driving license in South Africa if it is in any language other than English, especially if you’re
renting a car
.
If you want to cover all your bases and get an IDP anyway, just to be on the safe side, follow these steps:
  • Apply with the
    FIA/AIT
  • You must be 18 or older
  • Apply before traveling internationally within your home country
  • Hold a permanent license in your home country, not a temporary one
  • Pay a $20 permit fee
  • Bring two photographs that follow the
same standards as a US passport
Whether or not you get an IDP, you’re going to want to
