I just moved to North Dakota and I’m going to be changing over my vehicle registration. Do I need to get a front license plate here?

Yes, you do need a front license plate in North Dakota. According to ND Century Code 39-04-11, your motor vehicle must have two plates.
Here are some aspects of North Dakota’s front license plate laws to keep in mind:
  • Both plates must be fully visible at all times. Be sure to clean off any mud, ice, or snow that collects on your plates.
  • You cannot drive with expired plates. Make sure you remove any evidence of past registration from your plates. Only display plates that are valid and current.
  • You could be fined $10 if you’re caught driving without a front plate or otherwise violating the above requirements.
Thirty states require a front license plate, and North Dakota is one of them. To make sure your car insurance is up to date with your new state, check on your coverage with
