Do You Have To Change The Oil Filter Every Oil Change?

I’ve been changing my own oil for over twenty years, ever since I was 16. And I’ve always changed the filter during every oil change—that’s just how I was taught to do it. Now, a coworker of mine tells me that you don’t have to do that. Is that true?

So, your coworker is half-right. Technically, no—you don’t need to replace the oil filter every time your change the oil. Typically, manufacturers recommend putting in a new oil filter at least every other oil change.
That doesn’t mean you’ve wasted half of the oil filters that you’ve ever used, though—far from it. While changing the filter every other time your change the oil would satisfy the bare minimum recommended
car maintenance schedule
practices, changing it more often definitely improves your car’s performance in the long run—and increases the length of time that your oil is good for.
