Do you get points for non-moving violations?

I was cited for having a busted tail light a couple of weeks ago and told my insurance broker about the incident. I’m worried it will increase my insurance premium! Do non-moving violations add points to your driving record?

Unlike moving violations with points and hefty financial consequences, you will not get points for non-moving violations. Non-moving violations aren’t representative of the quality of your driving; most are given for technical issues or errors. You won’t accrue points on your license for non-moving violations.
Non-moving violations are when a parked vehicle breaks a traffic code. Here are some examples of non-moving violations:
  • Parking in front of a fire hydrant
  • Having an expired registration sticker
  • Not having registration or insurance
  • Parking in a no-parking zone
  • Have a broken tail light or headlight
Although non-moving violations aren’t likely to change your
