Do you drive on your first driving lesson?

I have my first driving lesson next week and I’m super nervous. I’ve never driven a car before. Do you drive during your first driving lesson?

Congratulations on your first driving lesson! This lesson is the first important step in a lifelong driving journey—and it’s absolutely normal to be nervous. You will drive on your first driving lesson, but not to worry, your driving instructor will be at your side every step of the way.
You can prepare for your lesson in the following ways:
  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Show up on time
  • Bring the items you need to drive safely, like comfortable shoes and glasses if you wear them
Three things that will happen on your first driving lesson:
  • You’ll start in the passenger seat—the driving instructor will drive you to a quiet area to practice.
  • You’ll learn the controls—depending on whether you’re learning on an automatic or a manual, instructions will vary.
  • You won’t drive for very long or log many miles. There will be no driving on busy highways—you’ll likely drive in a quiet area and learn some basic maneuvers.
Good luck! Remember to take some deep breaths and stay calm. Your instructor will be there to answer any questions you may have. You’ve got this!
