Do wheel bearings have to be replaced in pairs?

One of my wheel bearings on my front wheel is bad, and I need to get it replaced, but I don’t know if I need to replace that one or have both changed. Do wheel bearings have to be replaced in pairs like tires do?

You don’t necessarily have to replace wheel bearings in pairs, but there might be some advantages to doing so. Let’s look at some factors that may affect your decision:
  • Cost: You can save money by replacing only the wheel bearing that has failed instead of buying two new ones
  • Convenience: Replacing both wheel bearings at the same time might save you from another trip to the repair shop soon to replace them individually
  • Part life: It’s probably safe to assume that both wheel bearings have the same amount of use, so while just one failed, the other may fail soon
The decision to replace both wheel bearings simultaneously is totally up to you. Only replacing the one that failed will save you some money, while replacing them at the same time can potentially save you the hassle of having to return to the repair shop soon.
