Although most rental car companies allow you to take a vehicle out of state, they may have stipulations about driving it out of the country. Make sure that it’s allowed before crossing the border.
When you arrive at the border in a rental car, the Canadian customs and border agent will ask you for the following documents:
U.S. passport
Driver’s license
Non-resident insurance card, which is free by request with the rental car company
