Do I need to add my son, 18, to my car insurance policy if he lives at home and doesn't have a car?

I recently got a phone call from my insurance company saying they would cancel my policy if I didn't add my teen to it. He's 18 and has a driver's license, but doesn't have his own car. He also doesn't drive my car. Do I actually need to add him to my policy?

“Many insurers cover themselves by making parents add their driving-age teens to their auto policy. This is because they assume that the teens will drive the car when it’s available.
Your first step should be to call the
car insurance
company and ask about an exclusion. Sometimes you can get away with not adding a teen driver to your policy and exclude them instead. However, if your son does drive your car and get in an accident, your insurance won’t cover it.
If an exclusion isn’t an option, then you’ll have to add your son to your policy. If this causes your rate to climb significantly, you can always shop around for more affordable insurance with the free
