Do I need an international driving license in Europe?

My family and I are taking a trip to France in a few months. We want to rent a car to explore different parts of the country. Do I need an international driving permit to drive in Europe? Or can I use my U.S. driver’s license?

A road trip through France sounds like an amazing vacation—definitely one to remember!
For the most part, you do not need an international driving license in Europe. A valid U.S. driver’s license is acceptable.
However, there are certain countries where you will need an international driving permit (IDP) in addition to a valid U.S. driver’s license, including:
  • Austria
  • Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Poland
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
