Do I need a lawyer for reckless driving?

I was charged with reckless driving two days ago and I’m super stressed about it. I’ve never had a ticket before, so I’m not sure what to do next. My dad told me to hire a lawyer, but I don’t want to spend money needlessly. Should I get a lawyer if I was charged with reckless driving?

Your dad is right! You will likely need a lawyer when cited for reckless driving. This is due to the severity of the charges. You can reasonably expect to pay between $2,000 and $5,000 for a lawyer.
If you try to defend yourself (or simply plead guilty) and are convicted, you risk:
  • Demerit points on your license
  • Heavy fines
  • Potential jail time
  • Sharp increases in your
    car insurance
    rates
  • Possible loss of your job
  • Social stigma
By hiring a lawyer, you’ll get the legal advice you need. In most cases, your lawyer will handle everything—you won’t even have to appear in court. An experienced attorney will also have the ability to plead the charge down from a criminal to a civil case, effectively protecting your record in the process.
Whether you’re convicted of reckless driving or a lesser charge, your car insurance rates will undoubtedly go up. But don’t overpay if you don’t have to. Instead, use the
