Do I have to fill out a credit application to buy a car if I already have financing?

Can a dealership force me to fill out an application if I already have financing through my credit union? I went to the dealership to buy a car after getting approval from my credit union. The salesman said that I still have to fill out a credit application to buy the car even though I am not financing through the dealership.

“A lot of dealerships require a credit application to prove your identity so that they don’t get caught up in a check fraud scheme.
If you don’t want to fill out a credit application to buy a
new car
, you could try somewhere else or maybe ask them to call you to pick up the car when the check clears.
Know that multiple credit applications in a 14-day period don’t affect your credit too much. If it’s been more than 14 days since you applied for financing through your credit union, applying through the dealership will affect your
credit score
more severely.”
