Do I have to buy auto insurance if I live in Virginia?

I live in Richmond, Virginia and I recently bought a new Ford truck. Can I get away with not buying auto insurance?

“In Virginia, you’re not legally required to buy
car insurance
. However, if you choose to drive uninsured, you have to pay a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee to the DMV.
If you get into an at-fault car accident without insurance, you’ll be left footing the bill for all the damages and injuries. If you can’t afford to pay for the other driver’s expenses, you could have your wages garnished or be hit with a lawsuit. “
