Do electric cars need oil changes?
My wife is trying to convince me to buy an electric car and one of her arguments is that they don’t require much regular maintenance. Do electric cars need oil changes?

Nobody likes hearing this, but your wife is right. Electric cars need less regular maintenance than gas cars, and they don’t need oil changes at all.
A gas car’s internal combustion engine is a hot, high-friction environment, and without fresh oil, the engine’s valves and pistons can grind together, reducing their effectiveness.
Electric cars don’t have engines or any of the associated moving parts. They are powered by electric motors and a battery. As a result, there is no need for engine oil.
Unlike conventional gas cars, you won’t have to worry about any of these with an EV:
- Oil changes
- Timing belt changes
- Spark plug replacements
- Fuel filters
- Emission checks
Even brake pad changes are rare for an electric car.
This doesn’t mean that EVs are completely self-sufficient though. You still have to ensure they have enough coolant, brake, and transmission fluid. And manufacturers recommend professional servicing every two years.
