Could you point me toward my 2007 Prius’ battery location?
I bought a used 2007 Toyota Prius several years ago. I’m getting ready to sell it now, and I wanted to replace the failing battery before it goes. But for the life of me, I can’t find the dang thing! I don’t have the manual anymore, either. Could you point me toward my 2007 Prius’ battery location?

We’re glad you wanted to get the car in good working order before selling it. The battery in your 2007 Prius is located in the trunk of the car, not under the hood. And unlike some European cars with trunk-mounted 12V batteries, you don’t simply remove the spare tire to access it.
It’s a bit frustrating accessing the battery and requires tools you don’t normally need for removing a car battery. But here’s how to get it done:
- Remove the trunk’s floor liner, then remove the large black tray underneath it, exposing the spare tire.
- Remove the small cover on the far right side of the trunk. It matches the interior trim, and it snaps in and out. The battery is underneath.
- Remove the black air duct running close to the battery. With this in place, you can’t easily access the battery to remove it, so it will need to be taken out.
- Remove the brake controller, which is held in place by three 12mm bolts. Treat this part gently and be careful not to damage the wires connected to the brake controller.
- Remove the negative cables from the battery. Alternatively, you can remove the 10mm bolt affixing it to the car.
- Use a 10mm socket wrench to loosen the positive cable, then gently pry it off with a screwdriver. Avoid letting the cable touch anything else in the trunk.
- Remove the cross bar holding the battery in place. This has two 10mm bolts.
- Remove the battery, put in your new battery, and reverse these steps to put everything back together.
