It’s good to be cautious, for sure, especially since you’re driving a rental. It is possible for your car to be struck by lightning while driving.
Although you will generally be safe inside a car with an interior completely enclosed by hard metal, your car may be damaged.
Here are damages that can result from lightning striking a car:
- Burn marks along the top or side of the vehicle
- Fried electrical components
- Ruined tires
- Shattered rear window
- Fire or melted components
In the end, it’s probably best to wait out the storm if you can—just to be safe.
