Can you wear earbuds while driving?

My car’s stereo leaves a lot to be desired, so I always wear earbuds while driving. My mom told me that doing so is against the law. Is it illegal to wear earbuds while driving?

Interestingly, both of you are somewhat correct! You can wear earbuds while driving in 32 states and the District of Columbia.
However, it’s illegal to wear earbuds while driving in nine states, including:
  • Alaska
  • California
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • Ohio
  • Rhode Island
  • Virginia
  • Washington
Where it’s banned, wearing earbuds while driving may result in a
citation
. So if you live in one of those states, you may want to think about repairing your stereo system rather than getting a ticket.
Nine other states have certain restrictions with regard to earbuds or headphones. In states like these, you usually can wear a single earbud—but only to take a phone call.
If you decide to upgrade your stereo system, you may want to add
