Can you use your own car for driving lessons?
I’m taking driving lessons this year and I already own the car I plan to use once I get my license. Can I drive my own car for lessons even though I’m not a licensed driver?

Owning a car before you get your driver’s license puts you one step ahead of the game! It’s perfectly okay to use your own car for driving lessons, as long as the vehicle meets standard road regulations.
Being able to practice with your own car will also depend on whether you take private lessons or attend driving school. Some driving schools may require you to use their vehicle, which will likely contain dual controls (i.e., a brake pedal on the passenger’s side).
But as long as your instructor gives you the okay, you can prepare your car for lessons. Here’s how:
- You must be insured: Do not drive a vehicle without insurance—it’s against the law. If you get in an accident while uninsured, this could prolong your plan for getting a driver’s license.
- Register your vehicle: You’re legally obligated to carry registration in your vehicle. If you get pulled over, you will be asked to show proof of registration.
- Be ready to pass a safety inspection: Keep your car up to the standards needed to pass the safety check that will be performed the day of your driving test. A working horn, intact mirrors, functional seatbelts, and functional headlights and brake lights are necessary for road safety.
