Can you turn right on red in Michigan?

I’m wondering if it’s legal to make a right on red in Michigan. I don’t want to pick up a ticket when I go to visit my sister there. Can I make right turns if the light is red?

It’s always smart to check a state’s traffic laws if you know you are going to be driving there. For the most part, making a right on red in Michigan is permitted.
Michigan’s rules allow drivers to make a right on red at an intersection as long as there is no sign posted that says otherwise. For a driver to do this, they must:
  • Make a complete stop at the red light
  • Check for oncoming traffic and crossing pedestrians
  • Make the right turn once all is clear
Every state in the US allows drivers to make a right on red, although some states have more exceptions than others. New York City famously does not allow right-on-red turns at most intersections, although the rest of New York generally does.
If a driver in Michigan fails to stop at the red light first or ignores a sign indicating the turn is not allowed, they could face a red light ticket.
Red light tickets affect insurance
and carry a fine, so it’s always best to avoid them.
