I live in Overland Park, Kansas, and I’m the captain of my urology practice’s bowling team. Our games run Tuesday and Thursday evenings right after work, and we compete against the cardiology practice across the hall. Whoever’s at the bowling alley first gets the other team to buy the snacks, which taste so much better when someone else pays for them. I’m often in a rush to get there, so I never even thought to ask—can you turn right on a red light in Kansas?

before you thought to ask that question, Doctor, but yes, you can turn right on a red light in the Sunflower State so long as there is no sign prohibiting you from doing so.And while getting your opponents to shell out their hard-earned bucks for your evening of bowling alley snacks is pretty awesome, always obey all speed limits and traffic laws, and be mindful of other cars and pedestrians on your way to the bowling alley, and whenever you’re driving.
These are the rules you need to follow about turning right on red in Kansas:
- Only turn right on red so long as there is no sign prohibiting it at the intersection
- After making a complete stop, check for other vehicle traffic and for any pedestrians before carefully turning right
- After you stop at a red light, yield the right of way to other vehicles in or approaching the intersection, as well as any pedestrians
According to Kansas’ red light law, If you’re caught turning right on a red light without stopping first, be prepared to pay a fine of up to $75 along with any associated court costs.
