I’m driving to a college reunion in Wyoming with some buddies. We’re planning on renting a car in Chicago, where we live. Will rental car companies let us travel out of state with the rental car?

Yes, most national chains have no issues with you taking rental cars across lines. However, if you plan to drive to your destination and then fly back home, you will need to make this arrangement with the car rental company in advance. Usually, there is a higher fee for one-way trips and drop offs.
Some smaller, regional companies do not permit one-way rentals because they don’t have enough drop-off locations around the country.
