Can you talk on the phone while driving?

I decided to become a modern nomad and move into my van. I’m going to be traveling all over the country. I don’t feel like looking up laws for each state, so I have to know—can I talk on my phone while driving or is there a universal ban?

It’s awesome you’re making the jump into vanlife! You’re sure to have a lot of awesome adventures.
There’s no one law about phone use while driving. You can talk on the phone while driving in some states; you cannot in others. The laws vary—sometimes even by municipality within states.
Even though laws change between states, what’s usually true is that you can make a hands-free call as long as you’re an adult with a full license.
It might be a good idea to upgrade the technology in your van to enable one of these hands-free options (if it isn’t already equipped):
  • Integrating your phone with your car’s audio system
  • Connecting your phone via Bluetooth
  • Mounting your phone on your dash and using speakerphone
