Can you smoke cigarettes while driving in California?

I love to have an occasional cigarette to unwind while I’m driving home from work. However, someone told me that California passed a law and now it’s illegal. Can I smoke cigarettes behind the wheel in California?

If you’re driving by yourself after a long day at work, you can smoke cigarettes while driving in
California
. However, a law passed in 2008 prevents you from smoking if a minor 17 years of age or younger is in the car with you.
The California Health and Safety Code Section 118948 dictates that smoking cigarettes is now an offense if a minor is in the car. It’s punishable by a fine of $100.
This won’t go on your permanent record nor will it result in an increase in car insurance rates. Instead, it’s meant to show respect for the health of your passengers. But if you’re by yourself, you’re a consenting adult, so you shouldn’t have any issues.
