My uncle just bought a new car and wants to give me his old car as a gift. However, money is tight right now and I can't pay insurance for another month. Can you own a car in Illinois without having car insurance?

“Yes, technically you can own a vehicle without insurance for a little while, but you can’t drive it in Illinois. That said, Illinois gives you 20 days to register the vehicle once you come into possession of it. But when you register it, you have to provide proof of

.If your uncle is just holding onto the car right now, work something out with him so you have the money to get insurance (as well as money to register the car) within the 20-day time frame. Then you won’t have to worry about having a car without insurance or the 20-day window lapsing.”
