Can you overcharge an electric car battery?

If I plan on buying an electric car, is it safe to leave the car plugged into the charger overnight, or even for a day or two? Could I potentially be overcharging the battery?

While the battery on your

electric vehicle

will stop charging once it is at its set limit, it is not necessarily recommended to charge your car fully to 100% every time you charge it.

Much like any other electronics with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, leaving your

plugged in all the time can slowly corrode the battery’s performance overall.

You shouldn’t worry however if you do charge your car frequently to 100%. While charging to about 80% is optimal to extending the battery’s life, electric batteries slow down the speed at which they charge around 70%, and some will even let you set a top charging limit.
