Can you mix different brands of oil?
I need to add some oil to my car. The problem is I have two different brands of oil and I’ll need to use both to completely fill up my oil well. Will I damage my engine if I mix two different brands of oil together?

Technically, you can mix two different brands of oil together in your car as long as they’re both on the list of oil recommendations from your manufacturer. However, even though you won’t damage your engine, mixing oils may not be the best idea.
Here’s a brief rundown of why:
- Oil may not be as effective since you’re combining multiple formulations
- Additives may cancel each other out as they’re supposed to work with their own formulation and not others
- Oil may not last as long and need to be replaced sooner
If you need to top off your oil, your best bet is to use the same brand of oil or take your car to a mechanic to get a complete oil change.
