Can you get pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt?

If I don’t wear a seatbelt while I’m driving, can the police pull me over? It seems like it would be difficult to tell through a car window if someone is or isn’t wearing a seatbelt, so I’m not sure how the police would catch people doing it.

The answer to this question will actually depend on which state you live in. In some states, you can get pulled over and
ticketed
for not wearing a seatbelt. This is called primary law enforcement, since the lack of a seatbelt would be your only offense in this case.
In other states, however, seatbelt laws are enforced through secondary law enforcement. In these states, you can’t get pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt. However, if you’re pulled over for something else (like speeding) and the officer notices that you’re not wearing a seatbelt, you could get an extra ticket for the infraction.
To learn which type of enforcement your state uses, check your local laws for more information about seatbelt tickets.
