Can you get in trouble for driving an ATV on a public street?

What can happen if I drive my ATV on a public road? My friend only lives half a mile away and it's so much easier to drive my ATV than driving the car or walking. I know it shouldn't be on the road, but how much trouble can I really get in if I am caught?

“The use of ATVs on public roads is strictly forbidden in most states. How severe the penalty is depends on where you live.
In rural farming communities where there are many dirt roads and ATVs are used to help with farming chores, the local police may turn a blind eye to illegal ATV use. In more of a city setting, it can be looked at as a serious offense. You may just be issued a ticket, but it is more likely that the ATV will be impounded and you will have to pay a hefty fine to get it back.
Driving an ATV on a public road is the same thing as driving an uninsured car. Even if your ATV is insured, the insurance provider will likely deny the coverage if you use the vehicle illegally or go against any exclusions in your policy. Avoid this at all costs.
