Can you get a DUI driving a boat?

I own a boat and love to entertain my friends. About a dozen times over the summer, we anchor out on the lake and drink beers. However, one guy we met said to watch out for cops because you can get a DUI. Can you actually get a DUI while piloting a boat?

A boat can do a lot of damage if handled under the influence, and yes, you can get a
DUI
driving a boat. Known as BWI, or boating while intoxicated, this charge carries some severe penalties:
  • Misdemeanor charge in most states
  • Fines of up to thousands of dollars
  • Jail time from 180 to 360 days, depending on what state you’re in
Due to these penalties, you should avoid boating if you’re going to have a few drinks. Instead, have a designated captain and make sure other passengers limit their alcohol intake. Unfortunately, 16% of boat deaths involve alcohol, so you can never be too careful.
Since you’re taking the time to learn about boating and the law, why not take a few extra minutes on the
