Can you flat tow a 2020 Jeep Compass?

So we’re loading the kids into the motorhome to visit my Aunt Glenda. Glenda doesn’t drive but likes to hit the flea markets on the weekend, so I want to tow my Jeep Compass behind the motorhome. Can I flat tow a 2020 Jeep Compass?

You cannot flat tow a 2022 Jeep Compass.

Flat towing allows you to tow a vehicle behind a larger vehicle (such as an RV) with the towed vehicle attached via a tow bar, in neutral, and with all four wheels on the ground.

Flat towing a 2020 Jeep Compass poses a problem because various components will be rotating, but there will be no oil to lubricate those parts, as the engine isn’t running during a flat tow. Specifically, when the wheels are rotating while being flat towed, the Compass’ differential and other parts are constantly spinning, but the transmission pump is not pumping any oil through them, as the engine is off. So, therein lies the rub—a rub you definitely don’t want your 2020 Jeep Compass to experience.
