My insurance company sent me a telematics device to track my driving behavior, but it’s making me drive worse because I feel anxious! How can I turn off telematics?
Reviewed by Shannon Martin, Licensed Insurance Agent.
I’m sorry you’re feeling anxious! The device is definitely not serving its purpose if it’s making you drive worse. Most of the time, car telematics devices can be turned off by simply unplugging them from your vehicle’s diagnostic port (OBD).
Newer vehicles may come equipped with built-in telematics, which may be harder to turn off.
Here’s a look at three popular types of car telematics:
On-board device (OBD): Often provided by insurance companies to log driving behavior. Easy to unplug from the OBD port.
Black box telematics: Often comes pre-installed in a car with GPS, a port, SIM card, or an accelerometer. These can be tricky to remove yourself, so it’s best to go to a reputable mechanic.
Smartphone-based telematics: Connects driving information through your phone apps. These are easy to disable by deleting the apps.
Keep in mind that disabling your telematics may affect your insurance plan—especially if you’re receiving a discount using the device or if you have a pay-as-you-drive insurance plan.
