Can my brother and I insure the same vehicle on different policies?

Can two people insure the same car or is that illegal? I have been borrowing my brother's car for so long that he ended up just giving it to me. I have gotten my own insurance, but when my brother removed the car from his policy, the cost of his new car went way up! It will save him more money if he keeps my car on his policy too.

“It is not illegal to insure one vehicle with more than one policy, but it is frowned upon by insurance carriers.
There are a few reasons why it would be better if the car was listed only on your policy.
  1. If your car is in an accident and a claim is filed, you can not be paid out more than once on the same vehicle. Since two policies cover it, there will be a delay in the payout while the insurance companies sort everything out.
  2. There is also a chance that once your brother’s carrier finds out the car is double insured, the carrier will remove the vehicle from his policy effective the date your coverage started.
This would create a significant past due payment for your brother.
