Can I use my international driving license in California?

I live in France. I’m leaving for California in four days and planning to rent a car, but I don’t have a valid U.S. license. Is my international driver’s license acceptable to drive in California?

Yes—you can use an international driving license in California to drive.
California does not recognize an international driving permit as a driver’s license, but a valid driver’s license issued in another country is perfectly acceptable.
Driving without a valid license in California is a big no, but did you also know you’re liable for some hefty penalties for driving without insurance? To keep you safe from fines, make sure you have the right car insurance coverage before you get behind the wheel in Cali.
