Can I Take The Catalytic Converter Off Of My Mercury Mountaineer?
I’ve been thinking of removing the catalytic converter from my Mercury Mountaineer. I’ve heard that that can improve the horsepower. Can I do that? Or will it cause problems?

Good question! So, the Mountaineer actually has three catalytic converters—two right next to the engine block and a third by the y-junction. You can take one (or more) of the catalytic converters off of your
, and it will still run. However, doing so will result in a variety of serious performance problems. Not to mention, removing it is actually illegal.
So, while you can take a converter off, it will negatively impact your car’s performance, expose you to legal consequences, and not provide the horsepower boost that you’re looking for.
