Virginia
every other renewal cycle as long as your license will expire within 12 months and you don’t fall under the following categories: - Your license is expired and you haven’t proved legal residence
- You failed the vision screening at the DMV
- Your vision has changed
- Your name needs to be changed on your license
- You have a learner’s permit
- You need to upgrade from a Virginia ID card
- You owe money to the DMV
- You need a new license photo
- Your customer number on file needs verification
- You do not have a Virginia address
- You have a license with a school bus (S) endorsement
- Your Social Security number doesn’t match the number on file
- You’re under medical review
- You renewed online during the last renewal cycle
- You need to take either of the driving exams
- You’re over 75 years old and have a driver privilege card
The renewal fee in Virginia is $32 for an eight-year license without special classes or endorsements, and you can pay with a credit card if you renew online. You can expect your new license in the mail within 15 days. Be sure to note that this process does not apply if you’re getting a REAL ID license.
