“You don’t necessarily have to pay rent in order to qualify for renters insurance; as long as you do not own the property that you live in, you are considered a renter. So even if you are living in a grandparent’s house, you can obtain renters insurance to make sure all of your personal belongings will be covered in case anything happens.
