I'm about to buy a new car. I want to get my license plates on soon, but I don't have car insurance yet. Is it possible to get my new plates before buying insurance?

“New York State requires drivers who don’t have valid car insurance to immediately turn in their license plates. This means that no, you can’t get plates without insurance in New York.

While different states have different requirements, most of them require you to have a current

policy when registering your vehicle. Then you’ll receive your license plates and registration card. “
