Can I get in trouble if I drive without an adult in Iowa?

I recently got my permit. My parents said I can only drive on specific days and times. I want to practice driving more. Would I get in trouble if I drive alone?

“Even with your permit, you still have to follow the rules! When driving with a permit in
Iowa
, one requirement is that you have adult supervision. You may be annoyed that your parents are limiting your driving, but they have your best interests in mind.
If you drive without an adult and are pulled over, your permit may be suspended. Additional offenses that will impact your permit are:
  • Being convicted of a traffic violation
  • Violating any other permit restrictions
  • Getting into an at-fault accident
If it’s your first offense, your permit may be suspended. You may receive a safety advisory letter as well. If it’s your second offense, your permit will be suspended for 30 days.
However, any time you violate your permit restrictions, you have to restart your six-month driving period. The state requires a
clean driving record
to get your license, which means it could take you a year or more.
While you may want the extra practice, it’s not worth risking your permit. Making good decisions will ensure you can get your license on time.
Keep in mind that driving without an adult may also hinder your future car insurance costs. At the very least, you will need to use the
Jerry
app to compare rates and find the best deal possible for your driving needs.”
