Can I drive my car with a temporary registration?

I just bought my very first car. The car dealership gave me my temporary license plate and registration tags while I wait for the official ones to arrive. Can I travel anywhere with the temporary registration, or do I have to wait for it to come in the mail?

Congrats on your new set of wheels! Temporary
registration
proves you own your vehicle and have it registered; you’re just waiting for the official registration to arrive. The purpose of temporary registration is to give you a way to drive legally until it gets to you; so yes, you can drive your new car wherever you’d like!
Some situations when you might make use of a temporary registration include:
  • You just bought a vehicle
  • You just moved out of state
  • You need to drive your vehicle to a pre-registration inspection
Once your official registration does arrive, just make sure to swap it out with your temporary one before its expiration date. Registration lasts one or two years, depending on what state you live in, so remember to continue renewing it at the DMV!
Something else you’ll want to take care of if you haven’t yet is making sure your new car is protected with the right
car insurance
policy.
