Can I cancel home insurance before it starts?

I was planning to buy a home, but at the last second, the buyer pulled out. We had already purchased a home insurance policy, but now we won’t need it. It isn’t effective for another two weeks. Can I cancel my home insurance before it starts?

I’m sorry to hear you weren’t able to close on the home! The good news is you can cancel your home insurance before it starts.
In most cases, you can cancel your
home insurance
at any time. That said, canceling your coverage before your policy starts will ensure you get a full refund if you made any payments to start your policy, like a downpayment or you paid your premium in full.
If your policy was already effective, you could still cancel, but you may face cancellation fees or not receive a full refund. For example, if you paid for your insurance monthly and you were two weeks in, you’d only receive a prorated refund of the two weeks of unused premium, not the full amount.
You can review your policy’s terms and conditions to see if any conditions apply to cancellations. Depending on the company, you may need to call an agent to cancel or you may be able to do it online.
