Can I add renters insurance to my homeowners policy?
I bought a house a few years ago, but I just landed an incredible job opportunity I can’t pass up. It requires me to live in a different city for six months. I need renters insurance and homeowners insurance too, right? Can I add renters insurance to my homeowners policy?

That’s awesome news about your new job! You can add a renters policy with the same provider who issued your homeowners policy, and you’ll need to pay for both policies for the duration you’re away from the house.
In the eyes of most insurance providers, being away from home increases the risk of theft or damage to your home. For extended trips away from home lasting longer than 30 days, you’ll need to notify your home insurance provider and ask about unoccupied or vacant home insurance.
Unoccupied home insurance tends to be expensive, typically adding around 50 percent to your premium. But luckily renters insurance is quite cheap, with the national average falling at just $160 a year, or $13 a month.
