Can felons get truck driving jobs?
I was released from prison about six months ago, and it’s hard to find a job with a conviction on my record. I’m a great driver and would love to find work driving trucks. Can felons get truck driving jobs?

While it can definitely be challenging to find work, kudos for your perseverance. The good news is yes, felons can get truck driving jobs!
Not everyone will qualify, however—it depends on the type of conviction, the time elapsed since the completion of your sentence, and the individual company’s policies. But if you check with several employers hiring truckers, you’ll likely find a company that’s more than willing to hire you.
To become a truck driver, follow these steps:
- Apply for a commercial driver’s license (CDL), which may require waiting until the end of your probation period depending on your state
- Sign up at a truck driving school that accepts felons (but beware of scams!)
- Apply to jobs with trucking companies that are open to hiring felons
If you’re eligible to obtain a CDL and attend a truck driving school, you should eventually be able to find work.
