Can driving cause lower back pain?

My lower back has really begun to bother me, but the only thing that’s changed in my routine is a longer commute to my new office. Could driving be causing back discomfort?

Back pain is no joke—I apologize that you’re feeling uncomfortable! Indeed, driving can cause lower back pain.
Sitting for an extended period of time isn’t great for your back, especially if you’re sitting in an awkward or cramped position. Several factors may increase your lower back pain while driving, so follow these tips to avoid discomfort:
  • Slouching is a quick way to cause all-over pain—especially in your lower back. Be sure to sit up straight with your knees slightly higher than your hips and your chin pulled back, so your head sits atop your spine.
  • Don’t sit too close to the steering wheel. Your breastbone should be at least 10 inches away but not too far that you have to reach and place extra stress on your spine.
  • If your lower back isn’t supported by your seat, you’ll be at risk for lumbar pain or injury. If necessary, invest in a specialized lower-back cushion or use a small pillow to support the contour of your lower back.
  • Be sure to keep your back pockets empty. Your phone, wallet, or anything else you’re sitting on could throw off your spinal alignment.
  • Long-distance drives put your body at increased risk for discomfort. When taking road trips, always schedule time to get out, move around, and stretch.
  • A bumpy road can jar your spine and increase back pain. Make your ride as smooth as possible by replacing worn shocks and tires and investing in a seat cushion.
  • If you’re already experiencing back pain before even entering your vehicle, driving could worsen it. Try heat or cold therapy to reduce inflammation and relax the muscles.
Above all, listen to your body, and be sure to seek medical assistance if the pain gets serious or debilitating. Staying well should be your top priority.
