Can driving cause anxiety?

I got my driver’s license about six months ago and started driving myself to and from school. I know most teenagers love driving, but I kind of hate it. I feel stressed and anxious before, during, and after driving my car. Is driving causing anxiety?

Congratulations on earning your driver’s license—I’m sorry it’s turned out to be a stressful experience! It’s actually quite common for driving to cause anxiety.
So, let me start by assuring you that you’re not alone. Just the thought of having to drive can make some people anxious, and nervous feelings can persist even when the trip is completed without incident.
Some people have generalized anxiety about driving, regardless of the road conditions or circumstances. For other drivers, it may just be specific situations that trigger anxious feelings. For example, driving at night could be particularly nerve-wracking, or you may be specifically fearful of tunnels or bridges.
Additionally, driving-related anxiety can range from mild discomfort to extreme distress. Some people—like yourself—may feel uneasy before, during, and after their trip. Others might have so much anxiety that they flat-out refuse to get behind the wheel.
However your driving anxiety manifests, it’s important to address it as soon as possible, as it could have a significant impact on your life. If you ever had a panic attack behind the wheel, you and those you’re sharing the road with would be in significant danger. On the other hand, if you begin to avoid driving, you could feel homebound and isolated.
Fortunately, there are many effective ways to reduce feelings of anxiety, and a mental health professional will be able to assist you in your journey.
