Can an insurer deny coverage based on my home having cast-iron pipes?
My home is over 100 years old and most of the plumbing is made from cast-iron pipes. My preferred insurer now says that they won't offer coverage because of this. Can they actually deny coverage?

The reason behind this is that the integrity of very old cast-iron pipes is questionable. They could fail at any time and the insurer would be on the hook for the repairs.

Shopping around can help you find a company willing to work with you on this. You should be able to find a policy, or at the very least, someone that will insure you for a short time until you can replace the pipes on your dime.
