Can an electric vehicle tow a trailer?

When I think of an EV, I think of a sedan or coupe, like the Tesla Model S or X. Are there any utility-oriented EVs that can tow a trailer?

Just like with gas-powered cars, trucks, or SUVs,
electric vehicles
(EVs) have a towing capacity that limits their ability to pull objects like trailers or boats behind them. That being said, there are several EVs that can tow a trailer (depending on the trailer’s weight). These include:
  • The
    Tesla Model Y
: This SUV/crossover mix has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, which means it can definitely pull smaller loads, like a garden trailer or small boat. You may hesitate at attaching a hitch to a Tesla, but if you’re willing to pay an additional $1,200 to purchase the tow package, it might be worth your investment.
  • The Rivian R1T and R1S: Rivian is a lesser-known brand, but a formidable producer of utility EVs. These vehicles have impressive towing capacities for their size, competing with some of the best gas-powered light-duty trucks and SUVs. The R1T pickup has a towing capacity of 11,000 lbs, with the R1S SUV towing 7,000 lbs. For most vehicle owners, this is more than enough for all but the largest trailers, boats, and RVs.
  • The Ford F-150 Lightning: The electric F-150 Lightning is one of the most highly anticipated vehicles of 2022, EV or not. Those who are interested in it may be wooed by its 10,000 lb towing capacity.
