Can a landlord force you to buy renters insurance?

I’m apartment hunting and found the most gorgeous place just a couple of blocks from my office. The landlord seems great, but he says that I’ll need renters insurance to live there. Can my landlord make me get renters insurance?

New apartments are always so exciting! Yes, your landlord can require
renters insurance
by making it part of your lease agreement. They’re not being tyrants. Some states even require it. Plus, having renters insurance is more helpful than you’d think.
Here’s how renters insurance can benefit you:
  • Liability coverage: If someone slips, trips, or falls and injures themselves in your rental, you don’t want to be stuck paying for it. Renters insurance can help cover the cost.
  • Additional living expenses: Let’s say the worst happens and a fire engulfs your rental, leaving you without a place to stay. Renters insurance can help cover the cost of a hotel or any additional accommodations you make.
  • Personal property coverage: Your valuables are just that—valuable. Renters insurance providers know that, and that’s why they can help you protect them.
While being forced to buy something isn’t fun, renters insurance is better to have in the long run.
