What a great trip that will be! State laws vary, but generally, a child under 13 and/or under 100 lbs. and 65” tall should not ride in the front seat.
Some states do permit younger children to ride in the front seat if there is no other option (e.g., other children are taking up all the space in the backseat). However, this is not ideal.
It’s dangerous for children under 13 to ride in the front seat because, in the event of an accident, the force of the air bag deploying can cause serious harm to a child. As a result, many cars automatically turn off the front passenger airbag if the car senses less than 108lbs in the seat.
If you do have a younger child riding in the front seat, do the following to keep them safe:
Put the passenger seat far back from the car’s front console to reduce the impact of the airbag if it deploys.
Make sure the front seat belt fits them correctly. If it doesn’t, they should ride in the backseat and/or use a booster seat.
