Are there toll roads in North Carolina?

I’m a chef, and some friends and I will be criss-crossing North Carolina trying the best food the Tar Heel State has to offer. Are there toll roads in North Carolina we should know about?

Yes, there are two toll roads in North Carolina:
  • The Triangle Expressway covers more than 18 miles around Raleigh and runs from NC-147 in Durham County to NC-540 in Morrisville. It also extends NC-540 as Western Wake Parkway into the Holly Springs area.
  • The Monroe Expressway also runs 18 miles and stretches from US-74 near I-485 in Mecklenburg County before ending at US-75 between Wingate and Morrisville in Union County near Charlotte.
These tolls are electronic, so you can’t use cash. You won’t have to stop to pay the tolls, either.
Instead, you can pay one of three ways:
  • NC Quick Pass: Register for NC Quick Pass online, install the transponder on your windshield, and you’re good to go. Electronic meters will read your transponder as you enter and exit the toll road and bill you accordingly.
  • E-ZPass: Similarly, you can use an E-ZPass. If you haven’t already, visit the E-ZPass website and register. When you receive your transponder, affix it to your windshield and you’ll be billed after your completed trip.
  • Toll by Mail: If you have neither NC Quick Pass nor an E-ZPass, that’s okay. Drive as usual. Cameras at the exit and entry points will photograph your license plate, and you’ll be billed via mail for your toll road usage.
