Are there enough battery materials to make all cars electric?
I’ve been wanting to make the switch to an electric car, but I don’t want to invest in one if it's just going to be a passing fad. Are there enough battery materials to actually make all cars electric?
can depend on who you ask, but some studies show that we have enough global reserves of lithium to make 2.5 billion batteries.
There are only about 1.446 billion cars on the road, according to 2021 estimates. The IDEA’s Net Zero by 2050 roadmap says the world will need 2 billion battery electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell electric light-duty vehicles on the road by that date to hit net zero.
So, while there is technically enough lithium to make all cars electric, not all lithium is going to go into EV production. It is also needed to make rechargeable batteries for laptops and mobile phones.
Another issue is that while the world’s lithium reserves technically are sufficient, the mining process of lithium is complicated and not all reserves can be brought into production at once.
